Image: by Suzanne R. Graham Timothy R. Cain and Gregory C. Wolniak achieved rank of full professor, effective August 1, 2023. Professor Cain started at the University of Georgia in 2013. His research interests are in campus activism, unionization, and academic freedom. He leads courses in the history of U.S. higher education and the American professoriate. In 2017-18, he was a UGA Special Collections Libraries Faculty Teaching Fellow, and he continues to incorporate historical research into his courses. Recently, he coauthored a commissioned history of the Spencer Foundation and received an article of the year award from the AERA Queer Studies SIG. Professor Cain is an associate editor of the Review of Higher Education and formerly served in the same role for the History of Education Quarterly. Professor Cain has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed publications and wrote one of the best-known texts on academic freedom, Establishing Academic Freedom. Since joining the Institute, Professor Cain has chaired 11 dissertation committees with eight more in progress. Professor Wolniak joined the McBee Institute in 2018 with research interests in economic influences and impacts of college and the degree to which developmental gains made during college translate to post-college outcomes. Professor Wolniak has been principal investigator on numerous externally funded projects, most recently receiving grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Spencer Foundation, the Institute for Justice and Opportunity, and the Horatio Alger Association. In addition to more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed publications, Professor Wolniak coauthored a foundational work on the impact of higher education on students, How College Affects Students: Volume 3, 21st Century Evidence that Higher Education Works. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Higher Education. At the McBee Institute, he leads courses in quantitative research and finance of higher education and has chaired three successful dissertation committees with six more in progress.
