Image: by Jewel Caruso The American Educational Research Association (AERA) recently released the book, Volatility in State Spending for Higher Education edited by Jennifer A. Delaney. Two McBee faculty members, James C. Hearn and Erik Ness, collaborated with two alumni, Denisa Gándara and Paul Rubin, to write a chapter in this new book, titled “Political Volatility in State Commitment to College Completion Efforts.” This project was a product of the William T. Grant Foundation grant. Their research seeks to examine how political volatility plays into state commitment to college completion efforts. By their definition, political volatility is a “variation in the extent of political support for higher education as a sector or for specific higher education initiatives, such as college completion efforts.” The examination is based primarily on interview participants’ perceptions of gubernatorial and legislative support for higher education. Through their research and analysis, Hearn, Ness, Gándara, and Rubin determine that political and organizational characteristics are highly influential in the political volatility of state support for higher education.
