In “Unpacking the ‘Female Advantage’ in the Career and Economic Impacts of College,” part of The Wiley Handbook of Gender Equity in Higher Education (2021), Tiffani M. Williams and Wolniak seek to uncover why the gender gap persist sin the labor market given the female advantage in higher education. The authors critique previous research for failing to contextualize experiences and not recognizing the fallacy of adopting a monolithic interpretation of the “women’s experience” in higher education and in society. These conceptual shortcomings impede researchers abilities to explain the disconnect between educational attainment and economic stimulus among women. They urge improved research designs to include pre-college contexts, better longitudinal data, deeper examinations of conditional effects, and more qualitative approaches to the query.
