John Mitchell (EdD 2011) recently wrote an opinion piece in ITProToday called "Take a Ridge on the Workforce Rollercoaster." Mitchell uses a rollercoaster as a metaphor for the ever-changing job seeking environment, and how companies should change their mindset to adapt and be "armed with the best tools and resources on the hiring front."

In the article, he also announced his upcoming Forbes book, Fire Your Hiring Habits, will be released soon. Mitchell gives advice on mindsets that should be discarded, or "simply fired," to be more successful in this rollercoaster environment. The three mindsets to change are holding tightly to onsite work environments, continuing traditional patterns of planning, and recruiting as if the workforce is a uniform group with common expectations and vocabulary.

Mitchell encourages companies to embrace a successful hybrid working environment, "If your team hit their objectives during COVID from home, it doesn't really require [staff to be in-house again]." He advises employers to adopt nimbleness in their approaches to hiring and growth strategies. Lastly, he urges recruiters to adapt their pitches and benefits to the person they are talking to. Mitchell explains that job seekers from different generations may perceive phasing differently, so make sure to understand what a particular candidate wants and needs.

Mitchell is the current CEO of IPC, a global electronics industry trade organization. He is also the former CEO of Golden Key International Honour Society. Mitchell is a graduate of Brigham Young University, Pepperdine Graziadio School, and the McBee Institute at the University of Georgia.
