Solomon Hughes (PhD 2013) was featured in UGAToday covering his Emmy-nominated HBO series Winning Time

Hughes plays Kareem Abdul-Jabber, an iconic basketball player and social activist, who won a President Medal of Freedom. Hughes drew on personal experiences as a former player of the University of California-Berkeley, as a student and administrator in academic to hone his portrayal of Adbul-Jabber.

According to UGAToday, the "intellectual curiosity and doctoral-level research skills, which he honed at UGA's Louise McBee Institute of Higher Education, helped him get into the character."

Hughes himself says about his experience here, "With Georgia,  you're talking about an institution that has historically been one of the premier places for exceptional athletics and then the [McBee] Institute of Higher Education's reputation in terms of how much they're publishing and how influential their work has been in studying higher ed - all of those things factored in."

James C. Hearn, McBee's associate director reflects on Hughes' character, calling him a "thoughtful, creative, and insightful" student.
