Job Description

The University of Georgia’s Institute of Higher Education (IHE) seeks a highly organized and collaborative professional to serve as the associate director (AD) of the executive doctoral program in higher education management. This program serves middle and upper level administrators from post-secondary settings using a cohort model for program delivery.  The position is based in Athens, Ga, but requires some travel. Courses are held in Atlanta, with an occasional meeting in Athens, and at an international location for a week each summer.

The associate director in collaboration with the program director will assume responsibility for the operations of the program, including interacting with applicants, enrolled students, alumni, the Institute staff and faculty. Responsibilities include 

  • Logistics and Operations. The AD will have responsibility for all logistics, including schedules, classrooms, housing and meals, course arrangements, and being onsite for program sessions, both local and study abroad. The AD attends all program sessions (including international trips) and provides continuity and oversight between the face-to-face meetings.
  • Marketing and Recruitment. The AD will consult with IHE staff to create publications and other communications for student recruitment; maintain contact and accurate information for applicants; and conduct recruitment activities. The AD will be responsible for a marketing plan and process for the program.
  • Instructional Support. The AD will assist faculty with the timely preparation and delivery of courses and modules; implementation of course modules both face-to-face and in the electronic learning commons (eLC); evaluation of the doctoral courses and program. The AD will provide regular feedback to the faculty on student progress and student issues associated with the curriculum and program.
  • Student Services. The AD will serve as a primary contact and resource in student services, including requirements associated with enrollment, progression, and graduation, as well as assistance with University of Georgia and Institute processes and policies. Regular communication, in person and online, with students is an important aspect of program success. Cohorts are limited to a maximum of 20 participants.
  • Liaison to Institute Graduate Studies Committees and Staff. The AD will collaborate with the Institute’s Graduate Studies Committee and Graduate Program Administrator to implement policies and procedures required of the executive doctoral program.
  • Financial Oversight. The AD will work collaboratively with the program director and Institute’s business manager to oversee expenditures and management of the program financials.
  • Alumni Relations. The AD will maintain and build the executive doctoral program alumni network and will engage the executive students and alumni in Institute activities that go beyond the higher education management program.
  • Strategic partnerships. The AD will work to develop strategic partnerships with institutions and agencies that are aligned with the purposes and mission of the executive doctoral program.

Program participants are full-time middle and upper level administrators across post-secondary education, and a high quality, seamless process is necessary to admit students and guide them through the courses and through the dissertation process. The AD position is central to the program’s success.

The AD will be expected to engage fully with all of the programs, committees, and activities of the Institute and to participate with other activities and duties as assigned by the director. While the position is primarily administrative, limited teaching in the program may be available based on program needs and the candidate’s areas of expertise.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in the field of higher education or a related social science discipline.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in program development and management in a higher education or comparable setting.
  • Ability to work with faculty and students in a professional and collegial environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in the field of higher education or a related social science discipline.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in program development and management in a higher education or comparable setting.
  • Ability to work independently and provide leadership to all aspects of the program
  • Experience with online learning formats, and/or experience with hybrid educational programs;
  • Prior experience at the University of Georgia is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work with faculty and students in a professional and collegial environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
