EdD, 1988

Michael Scales retired as the 12th president of Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) with New York campuses in Rockland County and Manhattan and an extension site in Puerto Rico.

Scales was at the helm of one of the most diverse colleges in the country with a student population that was roughly 13% Asian, 35% black/African-American, 25% Hispanic and 25% white, representing 40 states and 62 countries with nearly 30 languages spoken. “With such diversity, education does not begin or end at the door of the classroom,” said Scales. “Learning is continuous wherever one is on the campus – wherever there is engagement.” Scales adds, “Leadership and service were expected outcomes of the IHE. As a proud graduate, I succeed only if those qualities are consistently portrayed.”
