Charles B. Knapp, president emeritus of the University of Georgia, joined the Institute in the fall of 2005.

His tenure as president (1987-1997) was marked by increased emphasis on teaching excellence, sharp growth in research funding, strengthening of minority programs, successful completion of the largest fund-raising initiative in the university’s history, and construction projects totaling over $400 million.

Since leaving the university, Dr. Knapp has served as president of the Aspen Institute, a senior partner at Heidrick & Struggles, and chairman of the board of the East Lake Foundation, the highly successful community development program in southeast Atlanta. He has also held senior appointment with American Council on Education and the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Dr. Knapp served on the board of directors of Aflac, Inc. for over twenty-five years and is currently on the board of trustees of the Wormsloe Foundation.

He served as the director of Institute’s executive EdD program in higher education administration, 2011-2021 and currently serves as the senior advisor to the program.
