Image: In January 2020, Greg Wolniak received a research grant from the Horatio Alger Association to conduct a follow-up study of the career and educational outcomes among students from adverse backgrounds. As a long-standing PI for the Association, in 2017 Wolniak launched the association’s first ever longitudinal study of the developmental trajectories of Horatio Alger Scholars, designed to follow the entering cohort of freshmen scholars through critical points in their college experience. The current project builds on Wolniak’s prior collaboration with the association by conducting an additional follow-up study to collect important information on Scholars' experiences, educational outcomes, attitudes, and career orientations at the end of the third year of college. The resulting data will lead to important new understandings of the factors that help students from adverse backgrounds develop through exposure to college, and will contribute valuable information for the Association to continue its multifaceted support of Scholars. The Horatio Alger Association, a national nonprofit educational organization, has awarded more than $21 million in undergraduate and graduate need-based scholarships across the United States and Canada since 1984. The Association also supports and mentoring services to its Scholars who hail from severely adverse backgrounds.
