Image: by Jewel Caruso James C. Hearn, interim director of the McBee Institute, has been awarded the 2023 Howard R. Bowen Distinguished Career Award by the Association for the Study of Higher Education. This award is presented annually to individuals who have devoted their professional life to the study of higher education and have contributed to the advancement of the field “through extraordinary scholarship, leadership, and service.” It is named in honor of Bowen's extraordinary career as a respected scholar of economics, author, university professor, and senior campus administrator. Hearn has a strong reputation as an active researcher and effective mentor of faculty and students. During his career, he has served on editorial boards for several leading academic journals. In 2014, Hearn was presented with the Excellence in Public Policy of Higher Education Award by the Council on Public Policy in Higher Education of the Association for the Study of Higher Education. In 2005, Hearn was named a TIAA Institute Fellow, and he is a past recipient of the Distinguished Research Award of Division J of the American Educational Research Association.
