Ben Cecil (PhD 2022) co-authored an American Council on Education report earlier this year. “The American College President: 2023 Edition” is a five-year update to ACE’s body of work related to the American College President Study (ACPS).

The purpose of the study is to present a profile of top administrative leadership in higher education. Over 1,000 presidents responded to the 2022 ACPS.

Their 2023 report found that “the population of current presidents was still not representative of the students served.” The majority of college presidents were in their 60s, male, and Caucasian. The study also reports the presidents who responded were newer to their positions than previous years; this longevity statistic is more profound among women and presidents of color.

Ben Cecil ended his tenure at ACE on a high note: “It was an incredible experience to be a part of this project, and I [was] happy to be able to present high-level findings from this study at the ACE Annual Meetings in Washington in April.”

Cecil is currently serving as senior education policy advisor at the national think tank, Third Way, where he frequently contributes memos and blog posts on higher education policy thirdway.org/issue/education. .
