Two members of the McBee Institute community, Alexa Arndt and Brionna Johnson, were selected to receive the 2023 Louise McBee Scholarship sponsored by the Georgia Association for Women in Higher Education (GAWHE).

Alexa Arndt, a PhD candidate, hopes that she can help continue Dr. McBee’s legacy. “Dr. McBee successfully championed significant labor legislation-advocating that USG employees should be able to apply unused sick leave towards their retirement, said Arndt. She added, “I believe that my research, which addresses specifically women staff’s labor through the lens of social reproduction, honors the spirit of Dr. McBee’s legacy. It is a privilege to pick up her torch and further advance this timely cause.”

Arndt also intends to use the funds from this scholarship for conference travel which would enable her to present her research to a larger and wider audience. She also looks forward to attending the GAWHE Annual Conference with her professor, Amy Stich.

Brionna Johnson (MEd, 2022) plans to use the  funding to earn a Gallup Strengths Coach Certification: “I feel as though my own interpersonal skill, heart for justice, and dedication to mentorship reflect the values of Dr. McBee. I hope that one day, I will be remembered fondly as she is.”

Johnson thanks McBee IHE faculty member Amy Stich and Whitney Prescott, director of Career Development and Programs at UGA,, for their support in recommending her for the scholarship and cheering her on.

Arndt and Johnson will be recognized at the GAWHE Conference, Wednesday, February 22 - Friday, February 24 at Emory University. For more details, please visit their website.
