Beyond the Classroom: HESS Officers and Assistantships 2020-21

HESS Officers, 2020/2021

The Higher Education Student Society (HESS) is active throughout the year offering academic, professional and social events (see photos below).

     Alexa Arndt, president

     Grace Covello, secretary

     Sarah Burman, treasurer

     Kanler Cumbass, master’s representative

IHE students take an active role supporting each other. HESS sponsored student previews of conference presentations, a new series on higher education publishing, and regular third Friday socials and mixers with other doctoral programs. With the transition to online classes this spring, HESS organized online socials and launched a virtual book club with Tressie McMillan Cottom’s THICK and Other Essays.

Research Roundtable is a student-led series that invites IHE faculty and students into conversations about research in higher education, with a specific focus on methods.  Over the past year under the leadership of Amy Yandell and Matt Gregory, Roundtable offerings have grown to include a Journal Club focused on new studies in the literature on higher education, foundational studies undergirding our peers’ work, and self-care approaches to graduate school.

Recent peer-to-peer presentations included:

  • Geographic Data in Stata –Stephen Mayfield presented interesting ways to manipulate geographic data in Stata.
  • Mapping Techniques –Adrianna Gonzalez led a discussion of “mapping” techniques in qualitative inquiry and how it applies to research in higher education.
  • Introduction to Tableau –Jennifer May-Trifletti provided an introduction to Tableau and its focus on liberating data and empowering and designing for people.
