Benefits of Digital Storytelling Investigated by Hamilton

Ali Hamilton (MEd 2016) co-authored a research article published in the spring 2019 issue of Frontiers: the Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad with colleagues Donald Rubin, Michael Tarrant, and Mikkel Gleason.

In "Digital Storytelling as a Tool for Fostering Reflection," the authors note that "reflection is an essential process for optimizing student learning outcomes in study abroad." They analyzed undergraduates’ digital stories for evidence of both (a) disciplinary thinking in the field of sustainability and (b) intercultural understanding. The qualitative findings suggest that the digital story format offers students an opportunity to weave together digital artifacts that they often are already collecting.

For educators interested in providing quality international and intercultural experiences, the article includes a rubric for assessing how students used digital storytelling to foster reflection about their study abroad experiences.
