Image: by William Walker As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more mainstream, so too do challenges with thinking, teaching, and learning with AI. For example, in a recent essay published in The Chronicle of Higher Education ("AI detection is a business. But should it be a faculty business?”), José Antonio Bowen and McBee Institute fellow, C. Edward Watson, discuss the lack of accuracy that is associated with certain online AI detection tools. Concerns associated with the use of AI are discussed further in a book recently co-authored by Bowen and Watson and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. In the book, Teaching with AI: A Practical Guide to a New Era of Human Learning, the authors underscore how the use of AI continues to raise critical questions about its role within college classrooms across the country. Collectively, Bowen and Watson argue that greater attention to AI is necessary to critically understand how AI is and should be used in higher education. According to Watson, "[T]the book has arrived at a key moment as educators are actively seeking to understand the implications of AI on their courses, curricula, and careers." While discussing how AI is used by students, staff, and faculty, Bowen and Watson offer important implications about what AI is doing to the human experience and how AI influences teaching. Additionally, the authors offer insights about how AI encourages the use of innovative designs for student assessments and assignments. Watson started further that one of the key goals of the book is to help faculty and administrators conceptualize practical steps to ensure positive learning outcomes are achieved from intentionally designed courses. Watson currently serves as the vice president for digital innovation at the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U).
