Dr. Roy I Jones

Dr. Roy I. Jones (EdD 1981) has the distinction of being the Institute of Higher Education’s first African American graduate as well as an outstanding alumnus.

He has an impressive and impactful career including his present appointed position, provost distinguished professor (2019-2023), a special designation awarded by the provost to recognize outstanding scholars who are highly productive and build a national reputation for Clemson University. Jones also serves as a professor in Clemson’s College of Education and director for both Call Me MISTER® program and the Center for Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Educators (CRe²DE), a South Carolina Commission of Higher Education Center of Excellence.

As a Clemson faculty member since 2003 and lifelong educator, Jones has been a nationally recognized scholar and advocate for minority teachers at all levels of education and for underrepresented and underserved students, families and communities in South Carolina and across the nation.

His 1981 dissertation was a foundational study researching important minority issues, and the Institute of Higher Education continues today to research areas of diversity, equity, access, and student outcomes.

Jones continues to have an impact at the Institute. Recent graduate Dr. C. Emmanuel Little cites Jones as an inspirational mentor and guide, “He's an amazing, influential leader, and I'm fortunate to have him as someone I consider as part of my professional circle.”
