PhD, 2012 Sarah Brackmann is the Director of Community-Based Learning at Georgia Tech's Office of Experiential and Engaged Learning (E2L). She collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to ensure the successful integration of community engagement and student experiential learning into the curriculum, co-curricular and extracurricular offerings. Brackman previously served as the senior director of integrative and community-engaged learning at Southwestern University where she oversaw Community-Engaged Learning, Study Abroad & International Student Services, and Faculty-Mentored Research. While at the Institute of Higher Education, her research focused on the impact of decreased state funding on community engagement programs. She earned a Masters of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs with a concentration in service-learning from The Ohio State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Xavier University (OH). Brackmann's passion for civic engagement began as an AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteer at Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU). At OLLU, Brackmann worked with faculty, staff, students, and community partners to coordinate academic service-learning. After finishing two years of national service, she continued her work in civic engagement as a teaching assistant at The Ohio State University, the assistant director of student involvement for community service at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and the graduate assistant for the University of Georgia's Office of Service-Learning. She is active in several civic engagement professional organizations. She has presented on the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, alternative breaks, and the assessment of service-learning student outcomes at regional Gulf South Summits. She is an Editorial Fellow for the International Association of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE), and has also presented several papers studying the intersections of neoliberalism and community engagement at IARSLCE's conferences. Brackmann has also been acknowledged for her work in the field of higher education. The Ohio State University's Student Personnel Assistantship Program recognized Brackmann as the 2008 Emerging Professional, and the American College Personnel Association- Commission on Student Involvement awarded her the 2008 Outstanding New Professional award. She also received the Georgia Association of Women in Higher Education's 2010 Louise McBee Scholarship for her leadership in the field of higher education.
