Michael Horan is Executive Vice President and CFO of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. 

Horan's prior roles included vice president for finance, chief financial officer, and treasurer at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Horan came to IIT from Capital University in Columbus, OH where he served as vice president for business and finance. He was a key member of the university’s leadership team, and provided support, analysis, engagement, and shared leadership in strategic planning efforts. He managed Capital’s financial programs, including financial modeling, budget development and execution, investment management, facilities, purchasing, property and liability insurance programs, auxiliary enterprises, corporate and vendor relationships, and capital projects.

Previously, Horan served as vice president for business and finance and chief financial officer at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, from 2009-2014 and as an adjunct professor of business since 1998. At Oglethorpe, he orchestrated a financial turnaround, rebuilding the Office of the Controller and financial operations, and developing financial modeling to realign the university’s fiscal stability and balance sheet to support its mission, values, strategic plan and annual goals.

Prior to his career in higher education, Horan was vice president and controller, and executive director for shared services and restructuring at Cox Communications, the third largest cable company in the United States. Previously, he was general manager and operations manager at Cox Cable. Horan, who is a certified public accountant, earned a bachelor’s degree from Fort Lewis College in Colorado and holds two advanced degrees: a Master of Business Administration from the University of Connecticut and a Doctor of Higher Education Administration from the University of Georgia.

He has been an accounting and business professor at OU since 1998 but joined the President’s Cabinet in May 2011. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Col. and his MBA from the University of Connecticut. He is also a Certified Public Accountant. Mike oversees the Business Office, Information Technology, Facilities, Human Resources and Campus Safety. An entrepreneur, Mike has also managed several businesses.
