Education Policy Seminars



The Education Policy Series at the Institute of Higher Education provides opportunities for the exchange of views on key policy issues in higher education and related areas. Seminar participants include faculty, graduate students, administrators, and policy experts who come from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. Speakers for the seminar come from colleges and universities across the country as well as research and policy centers and government agencies connected to education policy issues at all levels.

All meetings are held in Meigs Hall, Room 101. Please direct all inquires to James Hearn, seminar coordinator.

Fostering Major Organizational Change in Higher Education Institutions

Ann Austin

Ann E. Austin is a Professor at Michigan State University, who held the inaugural Mildred B. Erickson Distinguished Chair in Higher, Adult, and Lifelong Education (HALE) from 2005 to 2008. Her scholarly interests focus on faculty careers, roles, and professional development, work and workplaces in academe, organizational change and transformation in universities and colleges, reform in doctoral education, and the improvement of teaching and learning in higher education. She was a Fulbright Fellow in South Africa (1998) and the 2001-2002 President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). She is currently Co-P.I. of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), a National Science Foundation Center now in its sixth year. She also is the director of the Global Institute for Higher Education (GIHE), a new institute at Michigan State focused on higher education issues in a global context. Her recent publications include Rethinking Faculty Work: Higher Education's Strategic Imperative (2007), concerning changes in academic workplaces and faculty careers, as well as work on doctoral education and higher education issues in developing countries.

Shouping Hu

Dr. Shouping Hu is a Professor of Higher Education, the Louis W. and Elizabeth N. Bender Endowed Professor, and the founding Director of the Center for Postsecondary Success (CPS) at Florida State University.

Dr. Hu’s research interests examine issues related to college access and success, student engagement and learning, and higher education policy. Dr. Hu has published more than 50 journal articles and book chapters and is the author of five books. He has received funding support from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the Gates Foundation, the Regional Educational Laboratory-Southeast (REL-SE), NPEC/AIR, and other sources.

Dr. Hu teaches graduate-level courses in Higher Education Finance, International Perspectives in Higher Education, Student Success in College (on-line), and Research on College Students. He also taught courses such as Public Policy in Higher Education, Prospectus Development, State Education Policy, American College Students, among others.

Dr. Hu served on the editorial/advisory board of Journal of Higher Education, Educational Researcher, Research in Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, and ASHE Higher Education Report Series. He also served as a standing member for the Systems and Broad Reform panel and a member for the National Research and Development (R&D) Center panel for IES.

Bradley Curs

Dr. Curs is Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Missouri. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Economics at the University of Oregon in August 2005. His research has primarily focused on the efficacy of financial aid programs, at the national, state and institutional level, in increasing access to higher education for low-income students. His teaching portfolio includes: the economics of education, higher education finance, overview of higher education, higher education policy, educational policy studies, college access, and quantitative methods in educational research.
